Over the last few years there has been an increasing awareness of the dangers of deep venous thrombosis and pulmonary embolism with air travel. Mr Brygel believes there is an increase risk of similar problems associated with general anaesethesia for surgery in particular hernia operations. The risk is small but he believes it can be minimised by using local anaesethesia only. The patient is able to move the legs around and exercise the calf muscles during the procedure. The patient is also fully mobile immediately following the procedure.
